Explorer Campers
Explorers range from 5-12 years of age and attend camp for a full day of activities from 9:00am to 3:00pm. Each camper will be assigned to a group of peers that will stick together for the whole week. They’ll rotate throughout the day between 4-6 counselors providing different classes. Campers will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a variety of activities, such as exploring pond life, bird watching, learning new camp songs, and visiting animals at the Visitor Center. They’ll engage in recreation, arts and crafts, science experiments, and take daily hikes. They’ll also discover the wonders of plant life, our native animal species, and so much more! Each week, 1-2 special outsourced programs will join the camp for a unique nature oriented experience. Past programs have included ‘the Turtle Rescue League’, ‘J&J Reptile Show’, ‘Wingmasters’, among others. An Explorer’s day will be a highlight, offering exploration and discovery as campers enjoy exciting activities throughout Capen Hill’s 86-acre sanctuary.
Counselor In Training (CIT) Program
Our CIT program is for ages 14+ and is a volunteer position. It offers our oldest campers and newcomers a chance to learn from Capen Hill Staff & take on more responsibilities. CIT’s will learn life skills like leadership & communication. It’s a great way to start a resume for the future and earn community service hours. New CITs will have to attend (1) Training Class prior to camp to acquire the credentials needed to volunteer. CITs play a vital role at our camp and we can’t run camp without them! For this reason, we offer this training class free of charge. You will be notified when the dates for the 2025 classes are scheduled if you are registered.
This is a nature camp and we host camp rain or shine. Most activities are outdoors, though in very rainy weather, campers are inside. Please dress the child accordingly. Sneakers are needed over sandals. On a cool day, please have camper bring a jacket or sweatshirt. Hats are great too to keep the sun out of one’s face.
WHAT TO BRING:
- a Bag or Backback with child’s belongings
(each camper will have a cubby for the week) - a Drink, Lunch, and Snack in a labeled bag
- a Water Bottle or Refillable Bottle
(water bubbler is on premise) - Bug Spray & Sun Screen
(should be applied daily at home and packed if more is needed. younger campers should keep them in a labeled bag so Director can assist if needed) - Shoes are required
