“Dedicated to Preservation and Environmental Education”

Since the opening of Capen Hill as a non-profit public sanctuary in 1977, we have prided ourselves on being a safe space where kids can learn to appreciate the great outdoors. As our lives continue to be fast-paced with technology, it’s become extra important to slow down outside in nature! Our summer camp has thrived for 40+ years and has helped countless youth ground themselves with their outdoor surroundings.

Summer Camp is for children ages 5 to 12. Kids can expect to be placed in a group of around 10 similarly-aged peers. They will stick with this group for the whole week and rotate between 4-6 different Counselors daily. Each Counselor is responsible for providing new classes/activities every day, every week so campers attending all 4 weeks will experience something new each day. Some of these activities include science experiments, pond life, identifying hikes, arts and crafts, animal programs, and recreation. We also outsource a few programs within our community weekly to keep learning fresh and exciting. In the past we have had Reptile Shows, the Turtle Rescue League, the Fire Department and more!

We also offer a ‘Counselor in Training’ (CITs) volunteer program for teenagers (ages 14-16). Each group has at least two CITs with them throughout the week who are there to assist the Counselor and kids in any way. When groups take hikes, the Counselor is the leader and the CITs are sweepers in the back. When kids forget something or need a bathroom break, we use the buddy system. A CIT will take the child and their ‘buddy’ in the group to do whatever is needed. CITs complete a training session with our staff prior to working at our camp.

Camp begins at 9:00am and ends at 3pm daily. Drop-Off starts as early as 8am and Pick-Up ends as late as 3:30pm. We do offer aftercare till 5:30pm each day for an additional fee. Kids are required to bring their own Lunch and Snack every day and we offer a pizza lunch on Fridays for a small fee (done weekly). Every session on Friday ends with a Parent-Camper Ceremony at 3pm. This brief presentation gives the Campers a chance to show off the new camp songs they learned and then given a chance to show their parents around the Capen Hill property.
