Dear Friend and Neighbor,

As another year graces us, Capen Hill is proud to announce some wonderful new programs and improved favorite events for 2010!  First and foremost, check out our new website design.   Our fresh new look reflects our new attitude!  Add us to your favorites list and check back frequently.  Everything new and exciting can be found here first.

Capen Hill Nature Sanctuary is a beautiful 86 acre wildlife refuge tucked into the heart of Charlton, Massachusetts. Once the home of George B. and Ruth Dyer Wells, Capen Hill was established as a sanctuary in 1977 when Ruth gifted the land in memory of her late husband. Capen Hill is an independent, non-profit wildlife preserve and educational organization dedicated to conservation and the teaching of environmental education.

Our new Animal Sponsorship program allows you to sponsor one of the animals living at the Sanctuary for one month.  Your donation of $20 assists with food costs, medical costs and bedding. You will receive a sponsorship package with information about the resident animal you have chosen along with an 8×10 photo.   Stop by and visit with your animal.  Daisy, the ferret, and Edward, the bunny, love visitors.

Spring brings with it the ever popular Great Egg Hunt.  This time honored tradition brings smiles and joy to all those involved.  It’s not Spring without this wonderful event.  We hope for a warm and sunny day, always the Saturday before Easter (rain date Sunday).  Volunteers are always welcome and needed to decorate the 5,000 eggs or help the day of the event!

Summer Camp – loved by parents and little campers equally.  We have some great new ideas to bring to this year’s campers.  Registration will be able to be completed from the website.  Don’t forget to sign up early.  Fun and education in the same week, how can you go wrong? Day camp hours are 9 am until 12pm (fledglings), 9am until 3 pm (explorers) and we promise your child will enjoy every minute.  There are no TV’s here; it’s all live and up close.  We also would love to host your child’s next Birthday Party.  We offer an animal program and lollipop scavenger hunt.  Best of all, we clean up!  Call 508-248-5516 for more information.

Schools, scouts and senior centers, please join us for a Day Trip Program.  We would love to host your group, brag about our facility and what we do.  If you have never seen a Blue Tongue Skink up close, we have one that is amazing.  Like snakes?  Queen Alphabet is the most amazing snake ever.  If birds are your joy, we have the most beautiful singers just waiting to show off.  Rabbits, guinea pigs and turtles galore are just a few of our residents waiting for you along with an informational nature hike.

Looking for something to do?  Like to be outdoors getting some fresh air and exercise?  We have miles and miles of Hiking Trails.  Freshly groomed for easy access.  A weekend hike or a family picnic is the perfect escape when chores are done.   Any season is the best time to visit.  Visit us in spring when the blooms come up from the winter snow.  A warm summer day walk beats being stuck in beach traffic.  Bring a camera and get the golden colors of fall or a family picture for your holiday card.  Winter snowshoeing, are you interested?  The best part of your day is that it is FREE.  Yes, FREE!  Ever hear of Geocaching?  It’s a GPS treasure hunt adventure.  We have three located right on our trails. How quickly can you find the cache? Take a walk with a notepad and make a list of all the interesting sights along the way. Stop by our Library and get more information on the most interesting plants and animals you have spotted. Our Lady Slippers are beautiful!  The Gift Shop has some great little items to purchase.

Your Tax Deductible Donation will help fund these wonderful projects and events.  Even if you select items from our wish list (as listed on our website), all item donations are fully tax deductible.

2010 marks Capen Hill’s 33rd year of providing wildlife a safe haven and offering the public a myriad of interdisciplinary programs, summer camps, and family events.  Your contribution will enable Capen Hill to continue to offer our existing programs as well as give us the financial boost to create and implement the new and exciting projects that we have planned. Thank you for your support!
